Your Journey to Fluency in Mandarin Starts Now
Hi! My name is Chris, and I’m the author of Study Chinese in Taiwan: a How-to Guide to Becoming Fluent in Mandarin Chinese in the Shortest Time Possible.
Becoming fluent in Mandarin is a wonderful journey, but one that I’m convinced requires studying, at least for a few months, in a native Mandarin-speaking environment. In writing this E-book for you, my most sincere wish is to share with you everything I’ve learned in the hopes that your own journey to becoming fluent in Mandarin takes even less time than mine did. First, let me tell you a bit about studying Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan…
What you're about to read is the result of my own journey to become fluent in Mandarin.
Why I Love Studying Mandarin in Taiwan (and Hopefully Why You Will Too!)
EVERYTHING’S AFFORDABLE! From rent of only $150USD/month to complete dinners costing $2USD, almost everything in Taiwan is super affordable! A regular $15 dinner back in the Canada or the US is the cost of fine dining in Taiwan. You can live very comfortable here.
THE WORLD’S BEST MANDARIN SCHOOLS! No exaggeration. Taiwan has the world’s top Mandarin language programs and schools. Both the National Taiwan University and National Taiwan Normal University (I’m a student of the latter), Taiwan’s top 2 Mandarin schools, cost less than $800USD for 3 months of classes. With 3 hours of class per day, 5 days a week, it’s hard not to learn quickly!
DELICIOUS FOOD AVAILABLE 24/7! If you ask other Asians what they like about Taiwan, 9 times out of 10 they’ll say the amazing food! Fried chicken, beef noodle soup, fried dumplings, buns and pastries, hot pot, BBQ and more can all be had for a few US dollars at all hours of the night.
AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE! In the 80s and 90s, the Taiwanese government visited countries with public healthcare systems, took the best aspects of each and created their own system. Today, Taiwan has one of the world’s best public healthcare systems. After 4 months of having a resident visa in Taiwan, you’ll gain access to this amazing healthcare system – dental-plan included. Even without that, the cost of healthcare in Taiwan is considerably less than in the US.
CHEAP TRAVEL AROUND ASIA! Never been to the Philippines? Want to check out Hong Kong or Shanghai? It’s a short plane ride to all these places, and return tickets in off-season start at only $100USD!
TROPICAL CLIMATE! Constant rain and winter nights starting at 4pm getting you down? Want to go to the beach in the middle of winter? In Taiwan you can! Average temperatures in southern Taiwan of 24C in February means it’s beach season all year round!
COMPLETE MANDARIN IMMERSION ENVIRONMENT! If you’re looking for the ultimate Mandarin immersion environment then Taiwan is it! Unlike Singapore and Hong Kong, most people in Taiwan are not fluent in English and almost all the signs and menus are in Chinese. Practicing Mandarin with native speakers is as easy as stepping outside!
BEACHES! From white sand beaches to black sand beaches, surfing to snorkeling, Taiwan has it all!
HIGH STANDARD OF LIVING! The Taiwanese enjoy one of the highest standards of living of any country in Asia. In comparison with the majority of people in Mainland China especially, the Taiwanese are very happy and prosperous.
I’m convinced Taiwan is the best place in the world to learn Mandarin Chinese! This e-book is the only one of it's kind and the only resource you need to start planning your trip and accelerate your Mandarin learning.
Who am I? Why should you read my book?
My name is Chris, and I’ll be your cruise director on your journey to fluency in Mandarin Chinese.
Below is a bit about my experience in learning Mandarin. As you’ll see below, the journey to fluency in Mandarin for some people goes backwards as often as it goes forward, and I certainly made my share of mistakes (perhaps we should just call them “learning experiences”):
Way back in 1999, I took two semesters of Mandarin Chinese in my suburban Vancouver (Canada) high school. During my second semester of Mandarin studies in high school, our class was offered the chance to go to China to which my mother promptly said “there’s no way we’re spending that much to send you on a vacation to China!”- My dream to become fluent in Mandarin once again took flight in 2003 while I was attending the University of Toronto. I received an email that enrollment in student exchange programs was closing in a week and so immediately ran over to the student exchange office and applied for a student exchange program to Singapore. Knowing that Singapore is full of Chinese but that the universities teach in English, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to continue my university studies while learning Mandarin in the community. WRONG! Asides from a slightly amusing Singaporean accent, they all speak fluent English. Mandarin learned by the end of my year in Singapore: ZERO!
- Fast forward 10 years to 2009, I took one semester of Mandarin in a community college in Toronto.
- Out of nowhere on a sunny day in June of 2010, I wandered into a travel agency and purchased a return flight to Taiwan leaving November 1, 2010.
- On November 2, 2010, having self-studied up to the 1000 (simplified) character point and feeling pretty good about myself, I arrived in Taiwan only to be dismayed by the fact that I could not understand a thing anybody said and could barely put three words together on the spot to form a sentence.
- On December 31st, 2010, after two months of hanging out with Taiwanese friends I met online (best “mandarin practice” ever!), I was in the cab on the way to a New Years party and was joking with the cab driver – except I was doing it completely in Chinese and didn’t even notice!
- On January 23, 2011, my return flight back to Toronto left without me, and I enrolled in Mandarin classes at the National Taiwan Normal University’s Mandarin Training Center (MTC).
- Fast forward again to October 1, 2011. I’ve just completed my second semester at the Mandarin Training Center. I can watch most Taiwanese TV shows and movies and understand what they’re saying. My partner is also Taiwanese and we speak only Mandarin with each other.
I came to Taiwan hoping more than anything to reach a level of proficiency in Mandarin where I’d be able to at least have basic conversations in Mandarin without needing to translate every word in my head first.
To my pleasant surprise, thanks to the amazing Taiwanese friends I met who were able to bear with my clunky Mandarin, reaching that level only took a few months – and that was without even taking classes yet! I'm not brilliant. The environment makes all the difference. I know you can do it too.
What You'll Learn in This E-Book
You want to become fluent in Mandarin. This E-Book contains everything you need to know so you can come to Taiwan and reach that goal. A few of the more important topics I cover in the E-book are:
step-by-step instructions on how to apply for a Taiwan student visa and why you need one- common, costly mistakes people make during the visa process
- crucial information you need to know before choosing a school to study at
- where and how to make new Taiwanese friends and language exchange partners
- how to apply for Taiwan Ministry of Education scholarships
- the best free resources online to accelerate your Mandarin learning
- mandarin study tips from Taiwan’s top mandarin teachers
- renting an apartment in Taiwan
- an introduction to Taiwanese food

Stop putting your dream of becoming fluent in Mandarin on hold! A few months of Mandarin language learning in Taiwan is easily equivalent to a few years or more of Mandarin study at a college in Canada or the US – only a lot more interesting!
Have Taiwan Visa Questions? This e-Book Will Help!
The visa issue is a complex one, and it’s only made worse by the fact that not all of the information on Taiwan’s own Immigration Agency and Consular Affair websites is accurate! Some of the questions I’ll answer in this E-book include:
The different types of Taiwan visas- What are the requirements for the different types of Taiwan visas?
- Which type of Taiwan visa is right for Mandarin students?
- How do you get a Taiwan resident certificate if you want to stay in Taiwan longer?
- How and when can you apply for Taiwan’s amazing national health program?
- How much do Taiwan visas cost?
- What’s a visa run and where should you go?
How much does it cost and what do I get?

The E-book costs only US$4.99 or about the cost of one dinner at a restaurant in Canada or the US.
The PDF version of the E-book consists of over 100 action packed pages of step-by-step instructions, online learning resource info and Mandarin study tips from top Mandarin teachers here in Taiwan.
As a special bonus, it also includes a directory of all the Taiwan Ministry of Education Approved Mandarin language schools categorized by city and an explanation of which Taiwanese cities are best for Mandarin language students.
You could also think of this E-book as insurance against the most common and costly mistakes Mandarin students coming to Taiwan make. Choosing the wrong Mandarin school or city will cost you months of your time and hundreds of dollars. A visa mistake requiring you to do an emergency visa run will cost you $200-$300 for the plane ticket to Hong Kong.
This guide will help you become fluent in Mandarin as quickly as possible and also help you steer clear of costly, avoidable mistakes (many of which I’ve made!)
Study Chinese in Taiwan: a How-to Guide to Becoming Fluent in Mandarin Chinese in the Shortest Time Possible is the only E-book about how to come to Taiwan to study Mandarin. The benefits of becoming fluent in Mandarin are priceless and can last a lifetime. The cost of this E-book is only $4.99USD.

The Stages of Mandarin Proficiency in Taiwan
How do you know you’re making progress? Here are the phases I went through:
- Phase 1 - the unintelligible phase: Your Taiwanese friends haven’t a clue what it is you’re trying to say.
- Phase 2 – the “cute” Mandarin phase: Your Taiwanese friends understand you but laugh at your feeble attempts at proper pronunciation and grammar.
- Phase 3 – the no-longer “cute” Mandarin phase: Your Taiwanese friends have stopped laughing at you, and old aunties at the beef noodle restaurant lavish you with praise every time you say your order in Mandarin.
- Phase 4 – the "Taiwanese" phase: Your Taiwanese friends say talking with you is like talking to a Taiwanese person, and the old aunties at the beef noodle restaurant are convinced you were actually Chinese in a past life.
A Closing Letter from Me
This book is written for everyone that dreams about becoming fluent in Chinese. And hopefully by reading this book, I’ll be able to bring you a little bit closer to realizing that dream.
It’s a not-so-secret secret that fluency in a foreign language requires an immersion environment. For those with the goal of fluency in Mandarin Chinese, that means moving to Taiwan or China.
If you’re looking to study Mandarin in an environment that:
- is safe
- has (in my humble opinion) the world’s friendliest people
- is relatively affordable by Western standards
Then I’m confident there’s no better place right now to learn Mandarin than in Taiwan.
Moving halfway across the world to a foreign country is no small task. The purpose of this book is to guide you through the steps necessary to make your move to Taiwan as easy and pain-free as possible (as well as provide some helpful hints to make your time in Taiwan a little more fun too!) This includes everything from:
- Planning your move
- Visa issues
- Selecting a Mandarin school and choosing what city to live in
- Getting settled in Taiwan
- Making friends and dating
- How to maximize the benefit of your time in Taiwan and become fluent in the shortest timeframe possible.
Moving abroad to learn another language is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have, and with a little bit of knowledge beforehand, you can make the entire process even more enjoyable and rewarding. Investing in this e-book was your first step.
Cheers to your imminent fluency in Mandarin!
Sincerely,
Chris
